Back at Plateia Nerou yesterday, we welcomed one of the truly great artists of the past few decades, a musician who continues to expand his body of work while constantly redefining his relationship with his audience.
The evening, however, began with Baxter Dury, who showcased a large part of the excellent Allbarone as well as several key moments from across his career. From the opening “Alpha Dog” through to “Night Chancers”, “Miami” and “Cocaine Man”, the eccentric Brit reaffirmed the coolness that defines him, as well as the sense that he is currently in one of the strongest phases of an already distinctive career.
At 21:00, it was time for the main event. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, over the next two and a half hours, once again reminded everyone why they remain one of the most remarkable live acts of our time. Having built a profound connection with his audience, Cave consistently transforms each concert into something far beyond a simple presentation of songs.
Last night had it all: the explosive opening of “Get Ready For Love”, the ritualistic power of “Tupelo”, the solemn intensity of “Carnage” and “Joy”, the sweeping performances of “Papa Won’t Leave You, Henry”, “Red Right Hand” and “Jubilee Street”, and of course a breathtaking finale with Cave alone at the piano performing “Into My Arms”.
In just a few hours, we return to Plateia Nerou for the closing night of Release Athens x SNF Nostos, a sold-out show featuring Gorillaz, The Flaming Lips and Jehnny Beth.
