Imiskoumbria is the most influential and recognizable act in Greek hip hop. Formed in the mid-90s by Dimitris Mentzelos, Mithridatis, and Prytanis, they developed early on a style that combines humor, satire, and a caustic view of everyday life, elements that would become their trademark.
In 1996, they released their debut album 30 Chronia Epitychies (30 Years of Success), paving the way for the widespread popularity of Greek hip hop, as it became the first gold record in the genre. Similar success followed with O Diskos Pou Diafimizete, Stenes Epafes Me 3s Typous, and 2030, albums that went gold and platinum, establishing the group as a reference point for Greek music as a whole.
With songs that became timeless hits and choruses sung en masse at concerts, in clubs and among friends, Imiskoumbria gained a rare connection with their audience, all the while developing and renewing the satirical side of the local scene. Along the way, they collaborated with established and widely recognized names, bridging genres and expanding their sound’s reach.
With releases such as Ti Lola Ap’ Ti Fotia Pios Tha Ti Vgalei?, Gynaikologies, and I Apli Methodos Ton Trion, as well as later singles, ensured their constant presence, while the material from their early period continued to return to the collective memory of Greek music. Their songs now serve as reference points for different generations of listeners, encapsulating the distinctive humour, language and aesthetic that characterised a whole era of Greek music.
On Saturday, June 20th, at Plateia Nerou, the most iconic act in Greek hip hop will meet again with the audience that grew up with them, as well as a new generation of listeners that discovered their music in retrospect. This performance has been years in the making: an anniversary show celebrating 30 Years of Success literally, a rare opportunity to experience live the energy and history of Imiskoumbria.
