Baxter Dury and Anna von Hausswolff alongside Nick Cave at Release Athens 2026

Release Athens 2026 welcomes Baxter Dury and Anna von Hausswolff on Wednesday June 24th, at Plateia Nerou. The deadpan British songwriter returns to Athens three years after his exceptional performance at the same venue, while the Swedish composer and singer makes her long-awaited debut in Greece. This is an evening with a strong personal touch, dark allure, and singular artistic imprint, culminating with headliners Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds.

Baxter Dury is one of the most idiosyncratic and intelligent figures in contemporary British music. For over two decades, he has been building a deeply personal world where detached, deadpan storytelling, caustic humor, and detailed social observations coexist with elegant, often unexpected musical arrangements. His stories unfold in bars, apartments, and the dark corners of London, populated by characters who are wealthy, decadent, absurd, and profoundly human.

Son of Ian Dury, he gradually managed to shake off the weight of the name and establish himself on his own terms. From his debut Len Parrot’s Memorial Lift (2002) through Floor Show (2005), he laid the foundations of a sound combining new wave, chamber pop, and sparse rhythmic forms. The major breakthrough came with Prince of Tears (2017), where disco and emotional rawness coexist perfectly, while subsequent works experimented with dance and hip-hop elements without compromising his core.

In 2023, the dark and confessional I Thought I Was Better Than You confirmed his lyrical prowess. In 2025, with Allbarone, produced by the acclaimed Paul Epworth (Adele, Florence & The Machine), he presents his most direct and contemporary work: a sharp, melodic, and deeply observant record. Baxter Dury remains a unique chronicler of urban life, with a sardonic perspective and a disarmingly honest voice.

Anna von Hausswolff stands among the most uncompromising figures in contemporary European music. Over the past fifteen years, the Swedish composer, singer and organist has developed a unique style where Gothic tradition meets post-rock, drone metal, and the darker elements of classical music. The pipe organ lies at the heart of her music, with von Hauswolff exploring its full range of possibilities — from fragile, almost sacred moments to deafening explosions.

She has an impressive vocal range and intensity, and her name is often mentioned in the same breath as iconic figures such as Kate Bush, Diamanda Galás, and PJ Harvey. Her debut, Singing from the Grave (2010), reached the Top 5 in Sweden; however, her artistic identity truly took shape with Ceremony (2012) and The Miraculous (2015). Dead Magic (2018), featuring the haunting “The Mysterious Vanishing of Electra” and “Ugly and Vengeful”, along with the mesmerizing All Thoughts Fly (2020), established her internationally.

A few months ago, she released Iconoclasts, her first work on her own Year0001 label. This warmer, more pop-oriented yet equally stunning record, featuring contributions from her mentor Iggy Pop, Ethel Cain, and Abul Mogard. This warmer, more pop-oriented album is equally compelling and features contributions from her mentor Iggy Pop, Ethel Cain and Abul Mogard. At the same time, she co-wrote —with Filip Leyman— the music for the film Couture, starring Angelina Jolie, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival.
