Supergrass and The Damned alongside Morrissey at Release Athens 2025

Release Athens 2025 welcomes Supergrass and The Damned, on Wednesday July 16th, at Plateia Nerou. These two iconic bands, one of the most successful of the ’90s and the band that lit the first fuse of the punk explosion, will take us on a journey through some of the most enjoyable and distinctive moments in British music, until the long-awaited performance of our headliner, Morrissey.

Supergrass formed in 1993 by Gaz Coombes, Danny Goffey, and Mick Quinn, went on to score a run of five Top 10 albums and ten Top 20 singles in the UK, while generating millions of sales worldwide.

From the release of “Caught By The Fuzz,” which was crowned Single of the Week by both NME and Melody Maker, Supergrass proved themselves to be an inspired band capable of effortlessly crafting outstanding songs such as the mega-hit “Alright” – one of the most feel-good tracks of the past three decades – as well as “Lenny” and “Mansize Rooster,” among many others.

Although connected to the Britpop scene, Supergrass maintained the same intensity even as that era began to fade, evolving their sound and incorporating their more psychedelic and blues influences. Beyond the commercial success they achieved, the albums that followed (“In It For The Money,” “Supergrass,” “Life On Other Planets,” etc.), featuring songs like “Richard III,” “Late In The Day,” “Mary,” “Moving,” “Pumping On Your Stereo,” and “St. Petersburg,” created a rich legacy full of energy and humor that not only marked an entire generation but continued to gain new fans even after the band’s split in 2010.

Although the group resumed touring in 2019, this year is their most monumental yet, as they celebrate the 30th anniversary of their debut album “I Should Coco” (1995), which defined an entire era. To mark the occasion, Supergrass are embarking on a major tour that will take them to Greece for the first time in many years, where they will perform a set packed with their greatest hits.

Formed in 1976, The Damned made history as the first UK punk band to officially release a single (“New Rose”) and an album (Damned Damned Damned). Emerging from the London punk scene, The Damned are widely regarded as pioneers of the genre, having released twelve studio albums and several UK chart singles. They have also earned a massive fanbase fueled by legendary live shows.

Forty-eight years after their groundbreaking debut, The Damned have never stopped releasing outstanding albums, with their most recent, “Darkadelic” (2023), reaching the Top 10 in the UK Albums Chart and confirming their undiminished creativity and significance. However, the biggest event in The Damned’s recent history, was last year’s historic return of Rat Scabies, resulting in the band touring with their classic lineup for the first time in 35 years, featuring Dave Vanian (vocals), Captain Sensible (guitar, vocals), Rat Scabies (drums, vocals), Paul Gray (bass, vocals), and Monty Oxymoron (keyboards, vocals).

On Wednesday, July 16th, prepare for an outstanding show featuring massive songs from classic albums like “Machine Gun Etiquette,” “The Black Album,” and “Strawberries,” as well as beloved tracks such as “Neat Neat Neat,” “New Rose,” “Smash It Up,” “Life Goes On,” “Eloise,” “Alone Again Or,” “The Shadow of Love,” “Is It A Dream,” among many others.
